Do you think we could make a mistake that would destroy the environment and make ourselves extinct?

Take genetically modified foods for example, results of experiments can be manipulated for profit, and we have the bee population down 50% and bees dying even more rapidly, GM has been found in bee pollen and honey, the birds, by the hundreds that used to come to our yard...we have one dove now that comes and eats every night, what if it turns out it was a mistake, and we all get sick after time, why would they experiment like this something so unproven to be safe for future generations, or like putting flouride into the water...also the drugs and all, that are seeping into our water systems when thrown away or when we release them from our bodies, what are they thinking, or arn't they? Or do you think we can just do anything, and it does not matter?
